MM01What we take in Laramie

Heavy-duty and commercial calls around Laramie

Laramie sits on the stretch of I-80 where trucks either just climbed Sherman Summit or are about to. Our Wyoming work is built for that traffic: heavy units, loaded trailers and trucks that cannot make the grade.

  • Semis and tractor‑trailers

Breakdowns on the climb, units that cannot make the grade, and tractors that need to come off the interstate. See semi truck towing for what dispatch will ask.

  • Box trucks, buses and work trucks

Commercial units that are too big for a car carrier. Our heavy-duty towing page covers how we hook and haul them.

  • Units off the road

Wind and ice put trucks in the median and the ditch. Recovery and winch-out work gets them back on the pavement before anyone tows them.

  • Equipment that has to move

Machines on trailers, disabled equipment and planned moves. Equipment hauling and offloading are part of what we do across southeastern Wyoming.

Tell dispatch

  1. Eastbound, and the nearest exit or milepost.
  2. Whether you stopped on the climb or on the way down.
  3. Loaded or empty, and what is on the trailer.

  2. Whether the unit is upright, on its side or off the shoulder.
  3. Whether any cargo came off the trailer.

What WYDOT messages mean for a heavy unit

Around Laramie, the road report decides whether a truck rolls, waits or chains up. Here is what four common postings mean, in plain terms, for a semi or a loaded trailer.

Closed to light, high profile vehicles

A partial closure. The road stays open to some traffic, but WYDOT closes the segment to specific vehicle weights when wind goes past safe operating speeds.

For you: running empty or light with a tall trailer is the case this closure is written for. Wait it out off the interstate, not on the shoulder.

Extreme blow over risk

WYDOT can post this where gusts reach 60 mph or more and closure signs are not in place. It is aimed at RVs, moving vans, campers and small trailers.

For you: a blown-over unit is a recovery job, not a simple tow. Tell dispatch it is on its side.

Chain law level 2

Travel is limited to vehicles with chains, or all-wheel drive with adequate snow or all-weather tires. Commercial vehicles must chain at least two drive wheels on the same drive axle, at opposite ends.

For you: chain up off the travel lanes before you climb, and tell dispatch if a unit cannot make the grade. Fines run $250, or $750 when a violation closes the road.

No unnecessary travel

The road is open, but WYDOT does not recommend travel because conditions are hazardous. It is usually posted in winter.

For you: oversize loads are not permitted to travel under this advisory, so plan equipment moves around it.

Never stop in a driving lane to put chains on or take them off. If a unit is blocking a lane, on its side or anyone is hurt, call 911 first, then call us at (303) 674-0198.

MM05Laramie questions

What drivers ask us about Laramie

Short answers to the calls we get from this stretch of I-80. Anything else, dispatch can answer at (303) 674-0198.

What should I do if I-80 closes while my truck is broken down?

Call 911 if anyone is hurt or the unit is in a travel lane. Then call us with your direction, the nearest exit or milepost and the load. WYDOT decides when a closed road reopens, and we work the call around that.

We take cash, Mastercard and Visa. The cost depends on the unit, the distance, how hard the recovery is and the conditions, so dispatch will go over it when you call.
