Turn your mile marker into words dispatch can use

On a divided highway, “somewhere past Golden” can mean either side of a median. Pick your direction, enter the number on the nearest green mile-marker post or the last exit sign, and read the line in the dispatch panel out loud.

MM02Stretch by stretch

Five stretches, five kinds of call

From the metro to Floyd Hill the interstate climbs out of city traffic, up a long grade and into a construction zone. Each stretch shapes how our driver sets up and which truck we send.

  1. Exits270 to 262

West metro: Wheat Ridge and Golden exits

Heavy commuter traffic and exits every mile or so. If the car will still roll, coast off at the next exit and wait on a side street instead of the shoulder. We cover the city streets on both sides too, from Wheat Ridge to Golden.

    • 270Sheridan Boulevard, Harlan Street
    • 267Kipling Street
    • 265CO 58 to Golden
    • 262Colfax Avenue
  2. Exits261 to 259

Morrison junction and the foot of the grade

US 6, C-470 and County Road 93 all meet the interstate here. Exit 259 is the Morrison end of the traction law zone, so winter rules start to matter the moment you head west from it.

    • 261US 6, 6th Avenue
    • 260C-470
    • 259County Road 93, Morrison
  3. Exits258 to 255

    Mount Vernon Canyon grade

Eastbound, I-70 drops off the crest by Genesee into Mount Vernon Canyon, past brake warning signs and the truck escape ramp at mile 257. Overheated and stalled trucks on this grade are heavy-duty towing jobs, so dispatch sends a heavy-duty wrecker, not a car carrier.

    • 256Lookout Mountain
  4. Exits254 to 251

Genesee to El Rancho, our home exits

The bison pastures of Genesee Park sit beside the highway at exits 253 and 254, a landmark every caller can see. At exit 252, CO 74 runs south to our yard in Evergreen, so calls on this stretch are close to home.

  5. Exits248 to 243

    Floyd Hill work zone

CDOT is rebuilding this stretch between County Road 65 and the Central City Parkway. Its plan has I-70 in a new alignment in 2028, with overnight westbound closures and weekday traffic holds for rock work along the way. Lane layouts keep changing, so your direction and nearest exit matter more here than anywhere.

MM03Winter rules

Colorado traction law and chain law, in brief

CDOT uses two winter rules for passenger vehicles on this corridor. The traction law is the one you will run into most often.

Seasonal on I-70

Traction law

When
On I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 to May 31. CDOT can also put it in place on any state highway when a storm calls for it.
What your vehicle needs
Tires with at least 3/16-inch tread, rated all-weather or winter (a mountain-snowflake symbol, M+S or M/S), or chains or an approved alternative traction device on board. CDOT recommends AWD or 4WD in the mountains whenever possible.
Severe storms only

Passenger vehicle chain law

When
During severe winter storms. CDOT calls it the final safety measure before the highway is closed.
What your vehicle needs
Every vehicle must have chains or an approved alternative traction device, such as one of the textile tire socks on CDOT's approved list. Good all-season tires alone no longer qualify.
CDOT fines
$100 + $33Fine plus surcharge for driving without the required equipment
$500 + $157If that vehicle causes a lane closure in one or more directions

Rules as published by CDOT; check codot.gov or COtrip before you drive up. If you slide off anyway and the car is out of traffic and undamaged, it may only need a winch-out to get back on the road.

MM04What we handle

Towing and recovery on every lane of the corridor

I-70 calls come in every size. One dispatch number covers all of it, day or night, and we serve AAA members on the interstate as well.

  • 1
Breakdowns and no-starts. Cars, SUVs and pickups go on a flatbed or wheel-lift through our 24/7 emergency towing, to your shop, your home or our yard.
  • 2
Crashes. Wrecks on snow and ice, vehicles over the barrier or down the slope. Accident recovery covers the winching and the tow.
  • 3
Semis, buses and work trucks. Heavy units that quit on the grade or jackknife in a storm, towed or recovered by certified operators.
  • 4
Roadside help. Jump starts, tire changes, lockouts and battery installs when a fix on the shoulder beats a tow.

MM05While you wait

Stopped beside interstate traffic

Traffic on I-70 does not slow down for a car on the shoulder. Our drivers set up for the traffic first and the vehicle second. Until the truck arrives:

  1. Get as far right as you safely can and turn on your hazard lights.
  2. If there is no safe spot away from the road, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on.
  3. Never stand between your vehicle and moving traffic.
  4. Call 911 first if anyone is hurt or the vehicle is in a travel lane.

"Absolutely fantastic! They rescued us off the side of I 70 during heavy traffic and made fantastic time doing it. The driver was incredibly friendly and professional with the car i call my baby. Strongly recommend this place."

MM06I-70 questions

What drivers ask us from the shoulder

Short answers to the questions dispatch hears most from the interstate. Not covered here? Dispatch picks up 24/7.

Q-01

Do you tow on I-70 at night and on holidays?

Yes. Dispatch answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, holidays included. The number is the same at 3 AM as at noon: (303) 674-0198.

Q-02

Can you move a semi off the grade?

Yes. Heavy-duty and semi-truck towing are part of our work. Tell dispatch the truck type, whether the trailer is loaded, your direction and the nearest mile marker.

Q-03

How far west do you cover?

This page covers I-70 out to Floyd Hill and the Central City Parkway at exit 243. If you are farther west, call anyway and dispatch will tell you right away whether a truck can reach you.

Q-04

How do I pay for an interstate tow?

Cash, Mastercard or Visa. AAA members can call through their auto club, and dispatch will take the membership details.

Call with your mile marker and direction.

Give dispatch your direction, the nearest mile marker or exit, and which shoulder you are on. That is enough for us to send the right truck to the right side of the median, from Sheridan Boulevard to Floyd Hill.
