The heavy calls we take around Wheatland

Wheatland is the center of our Wyoming operation, and the work here sits at the heavy end of what we do. Long gaps between towns mean the right truck and gear have to roll on the first trip, so tell dispatch what you are running and how it sits.

WHL-01

Heavy-duty towing

Buses, box trucks, work trucks and other heavy units towed off I-25 and the roads out of town, with recovery when a unit is in the ditch, jackknifed or on its side.

MM02Wind and closures

Plan the call around the wind on I-25

WYDOT closes I-25 between Cheyenne and Wheatland to light, high-profile vehicles when the wind picks up, and winter storms have shut that stretch entirely. Pick the road status and what you are running to see how to handle the call.

1. Road status right now

Open
Closed to light units
Closed

2. What you are running

Empty or light trailer
Loaded semi
Bus or box truck
Machine on a trailer

3. Have ready when you call

  • Direction and exit. Northbound or southbound, and the nearest exit or mile marker.
  • The unit and the load. Tractor, trailer type, bus or machine, and loaded or empty.
  • How it sits. Upright on the shoulder, in the ditch, on its side or in a lane.
Check current closures and wind speeds at wyoroad.info or on the Wyoming 511 app before you roll. WYDOT says driving a prohibited vehicle during a closure can bring fines.
Road status Closed to light units Light, high-profile vehicles off I-25 between Cheyenne and Wheatland. Illustration only, not a wind reading.

If the road is open

  1. Get the unit as far off the travel lanes as you can and turn on your flashers.
  2. Call with the direction, the nearest exit or mile marker, and how the unit sits.
  3. Tell dispatch where it needs to go: a shop in town, your yard, or a destination down the road.

If I-25 is closed to light, high-profile vehicles

  1. Check wyoroad.info for which units the closure covers before you go any farther.
  2. If yours is covered, get off at the next exit and wait it out off the interstate.
  3. If a unit is already down or over, call with the exit or mile marker and how it sits so the recovery can be planned for the wind.

If the road is closed

  1. Stay put somewhere safe. Nobody gets through a full closure, including tow trucks.
  2. Call anyway and tell dispatch where you are relative to the closure: north of it, south of it or inside it.
  3. The run gets planned for when WYDOT reopens the road, so keep your phone charged and on.

Empty or light trailerThese are the units most at risk. After a December 2025 windstorm, WYDOT noted that many blown-over vehicles were underweight and some trailers were empty.

Loaded semiA full load sits heavier in the wind, but closures are posted by vehicle weight, so check whether yours is covered. Tell dispatch the load if it goes over, since it changes the recovery.

Bus or box truckTall, flat sides catch the wind. Treat it as a high-profile unit, and tell dispatch the length and whether anyone is still aboard.

Machine on a trailerTell dispatch the machine, the trailer type and whether the load shifted. A shifted machine can need recovery before anything gets towed.

MM03Local heavy work

Farm ground, a power plant and interstate freight

The heavy traffic around Wheatland comes from three directions at once. Irrigated farm and ranch ground spreads out from town, an industrial power plant sits to the east, and I-25 carries freight between Colorado and the rest of Wyoming straight through.

That mix puts equipment moves on the roads around Wheatland all year. A tractor or loader going between fields, a machine headed to a job site, a disabled truck going to a shop: each one is planned around the weight, the access at both ends and the weather on the day.

When something goes wrong off the pavement, like a unit stuck in a soft field or down a ditch on a county road, the call becomes a recovery. Tell dispatch whether the ground is dry, muddy or snow-covered and how far the unit sits from a road a heavy truck can use.

Farm
54,000 irrigated acres

The Wheatland Irrigation District draws on the Laramie River and serves about 850 users, so tractors, implements and farm trucks share the roads around town.

Plant
Laramie River Station

Basin Electric's coal-fired power plant sits east of Wheatland. Industrial sites like it are where heavy equipment and service trucks come and go.

Grade
WYO 34 over Morton Pass

The short way to Laramie climbs over Morton Pass, and winter storms can close it. Tell dispatch which road you took out of Exit 73.

Snow
Ground blizzards

In February 2023, blowing and drifting snow closed roughly 60 miles of I-25 between Cheyenne and Wheatland, and the closure later stretched north to Orin Junction.

Wheatland, WYPlatte County, on I-25
  • Exit 78 and Exit 80: into town

The business loop leaves I-25 at Exit 78 on the south end, runs through town on 16th Street, South Street and 9th Street, and returns at Exit 80 by Swanson Road. Name the street and the nearest cross street.

  • Exit 73: WYO 34 to Laramie

  • Exit 92: Dwyer Junction

US 26 leaves I-25 here and heads east to Guernsey and Torrington. Tell dispatch which side of the junction you are on.

South of town, Chugwater sits at I-25 Exits 54 and 57 on the way to Cheyenne.
